In this video, Mindset Coach Kamlneet Singh talks about how labelling the child can cause their spirit to break. When a child doesn’t get good marks in exams and it continues to happen. We are quick to label the child as a “Weak student”. This constant labelling on their actions can damage their beliefs while growing up. How with responsible parenting we can build their self-esteem.
When a child does something “wrong” we are quick to label them. In this case, ‘You are careless” because the child broke the glasses.
We do not see this as a bad parenting habit because our parents/family did this with us.
Through this video. He asks a very important question from parents.
What needs your Label?
The Action or the Child?
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”
What does this quote mean?
It is easier to raise a child with healthy self-esteem than to fix adults with low self-esteem and insecurity.
Applying parenting methods that we have seen as children is easy and known.
One “wrong” action and that’s it.
This child is like this only.
We may forget putting these labels on children but they do not forget.
These labels of “Bad student”, “Weak in Maths”, “Good Boy”, “Bad Boy”, “Careless” get embedded in the child’s subconscious mind.
Every step a child takes. Each future decision they make.
These labels keep running in the child’s mind.
Replayed over and over in the parent’s voice.
You know why?
Because for a child. Their Mummy and Papa can never be wrong. So if they said that I am careless then I am careless.
These beliefs stick with them for life.
Sad, isn’t it?
Change this today.
Next time the child doesn’t take care of their belongings.
Breaks something in the house.
Build Self-Esteem in them I Label the action – Not the Child
